Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica [Halfway Review]

Kyubey Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Creepy Dem Eyes Can't Unsee/人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\

Konnichiwa, Mikuites! When Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magika was first announced, I expected something along the lines of a cutesy, slice-of-life anime like Hidamari Sketch with a bit of a magical spin.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Would you put everything on the line to grant a single wish? This is essentially what this albino cat-looking thing named Kyubey (or QB, if you so prefer) asks you before you make a contract to become a magical girl. Sure it sounds great to have any wish you desire come to fruition and be endowed with magical powers, but you are forever enslaved to fight powerful witches for the rest of your life, no matter the cost.

If they witches don’t kill you, they will certainly frighten you, because they look like things only nightmares could be made of. They exist in a special realm unlike our world –– literally; the moving paper collages add a new dimension.

The animation is beautiful, the story is poignant, and I wouldn’t expect anything less from SHAFT. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magika is a thriller under a pretense of a mahou shoujo anime. It’s no surprise that it’s the anime everyone is talking about this season. Everyone should check out this anime, unless you are turned off by frilly dresses, maybe.

Don’t worry, there really isn’t much to spoil at this point –– in terms of back story –– I mean. That’s probably the only thing that has bothered me about this anime. They kinda throw you right into the action without explaining much about Kyubey’s motivations or how the witches were created, etc. And I always wonder each episode if they are ever going to explain any of it, or just continue layering on the dramatic tension.

Also, from people’s reactions, I imagined Kyubey’s voice to be deep like the dragon from DBZ, but it’s actually quite kawaii, so I don’t know why so many people are creeped out by him. :3

Are you glad about the direction Madoka Magica is going? And do you think Kyubey is cute or creepy?

    Mikuite trzr23 reporting again!

    1. Yes, I’m glad with the direction MSMM is taking. It is unafraid to do the needed. And by that I mean it breks the rule of the thumb that (mild spoiler) – kawaii girls can’t be killed and that mahou shoujo magic is always cutesy and never contains any real darkness. Also, there’s no “remember the time we spent together!” crap to revive the dead and transform the evil. Also, the build up to the Walpurugis has been MASSIVE. I can’t wait for the pay-off, and I’m pretty sure it will.

    2. I think Kyubey is awesome. He’s like the Youhan Liebert (Monster) of MSMM. Emotionless little beast, this one. As for his voice, well, maybe he has an alternate form. Maybe he transforms into a dastardly beast in the last episode and he goes mano-a-mano with Madoka ;) With this show, anything’s possible. I do wish people would stop hating on Kyubey though. If he wasn’t evil, then the show won;t be that good.

What makes Madoka Magica so exciting is that it’s so different (in animation and plot) compared to other mahou shoujo anime. You’re right, there really is no way to tell what’s going to happen next, and SHAFT made it pretty clear from the beginning that anything CAN happen.

Despite the mistakes he’s made, Kyubey doesn’t deserve all the hate he’s receiving — he’s just misunderstood. Lawl. :3
