The Sleepiness of MkMiku

Hatsune Miku Vocaloid Sleep Do Want And Or Need Motivational Poster Meme
Konnichiwa, Mikuites! Why I’m making a post about being sleepy when I should be asleep, I don’t know. Seems like I’m not the only one having sleep problems… I remember a time when I could marathon anime day in and day out. In fact, one of my very first posts was about how to stay awake at night. Although, I have learned the hard way that lack of sleep can heavily affect your immune system.

For whatever reason, I don’t have the stamina that I used to. Now I can only set aside anime to marathon once a week, if I’m lucky. And even then, I sleep the next day to make up for it.

I’m starting to wonder if there even are any benefits to marathoning. While it’s true that I get through more anime faster, when you add up all the extra hours I spend sleeping the next few nights, it almost equals the amount of sleep I lost. In other words, it would have the same effect just watching 2 to 3 eps per day and sleeping on time, as opposed to putting it off and staying up to watch 12 eps in a single night.

Not to make any excuses, but some weeks are busier than others, and when you have a friend’s birthday, eye appointment, award ceremony, haircut, and two meetings to attend to, it’s kinda hard to find time to watch anime. This year has been especially busy for me, partly due to moving to WordPress — getting settled in my new home. I spend almost as much time blogging about anime as I do watching it. XD

I facetiously made this tweet a few days ago, but sometimes I really feel this way.

I used to be able to get by with 3 or 4 hours of sleep. Now I need 6 hours AT LEAST, preferably 8 (meaning I can’t stay up as much as I would like to). On average, how many hours do you sleep each night?

my body is weird, im tired when i sleep little and im still tired when i sleep more!
I really tried to not sleep but i guess that is simply not me lol
i need my sleep or else i feel messed up/unmotivated/unenergised XD

blogging sure takes up more time then expected huh? haha

    • MkMiku says:

Some days I’m sleepy no matter how long I sleep: I feel just as tired after 12 hours as I do with only 6. This might be in part due to making up for lost sleep, but you can imagine why this would discourage me from sleeping any earlier than I have to.

Like I mentioned, I used to spend many nights in a single month without sleep, but I felt too crappy the next day to do anything, so I cut that sh*t out.

It sure does. I think what most people don’t realize is that it’s like having a 2nd job. :)

I sleep heaps and heaps. I tnd to wake at 6 am if I’m going out that day (even if I’m going out later in the day). I sleep at 10 the night before.

If nothing’s on I sleep whenever (midnight latest) and wake up at 7 automatically, but then I just go back to sleep again. For some reason I always ALWAYS wake up at 6 or 7 am… And I can’t ‘cat nap’ because that’s just impossible for me. So I’m guessing 6-7 hours for me, but I sleep longer because it’s better. snug snug.

    • MkMiku says:

10 is early. D: Then again, you wake up way earlier than I do. I try to sleep in as long as possible. Although, that’s probably why I go to sleep so late, too.

I guess you don’t have the need for a nosy alarm to wake you up every day?

  3. Nopy says:

I spend 8 hours in bed, but it takes me a while to fall asleep and I always wake up before my alarm, so the actual amount of time I spend sleeping is probably around 7.5 hours.

    • MkMiku says:

I think I lose those 30m just trying to fall asleep. Not ’cause I have trouble sleeping, I just don’t like sleeping unless I’m really tired. You’re so lucky to wake up before your alarm. If I could do that, I would never have trouble getting out of bed. :d

  4. Ryo_kun says:

I usually sleep for about 3-6 hours. Most of the time at around 1-3am and wake up on 9am if there’s no classes. Saturday is an exception though..i will only wake up on 11am for that particular day. It’s been very consistent too! LOL!

Though life has been very busy on my 1st year university, I still have time for anime though. But i can no longer do a marathon. Haha..it’s too time consuming for me.

    • MkMiku says:

      Congrats on consistency. Maybe that’s something I should pick up on. ^^;

I wouldn’t say it’s time consuming, you just have to find the right time. Of course, some days are easier than others.

  5. TRazor says:

I need 7-8 hours sleep per day. It doesn’t matter how this is split, be it 3 hours in the night, 4 in the evening or whatever. Just about 7 hours in every 24 hours.

Initially, when I started anime, I too got by with 3-4 hours sleep. But once I started blogging, things got a lot harder. Time management was harder than it seemed – I couldn’t write reviews/posts as fast I had thought. Plus, I have school, tuitions and football to manage.

Thank god I managed to find 3 other teammates who do an excellent job :) Relieves some stress knowing that if not me, at least someone is keeping it fresh. I advice you to do the same.

    • MkMiku says:

I’ve tried that many times and sadly it doesn’t work for me — splitting 8 hours into 6 & 2, for example. 6 hours is 6 hours, so I still feel sleepy no matter what.

As I mentioned to Fabrice, I learned that blogging is very time consuming. It cuts a lot into my free time, but I don’t care because I enjoy it. ^^ This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.

I’ve previously given the thought of forming a team, but decided not to. Ironically, I blog more now than I did back then. xD If other people joined, it wouldn’t really be “Mind of Miku,” if you know what I mean. But you have given me a brilliant idea. :)

      • TRazor says:

Spam guest posts. Technically, it isn’t team blogging, but it does ease the burden.

For me, the hardest part in blogging is resuming a half-way done past. I had enough inspiration to start it, but not to finish it. Thankfully, it doesn’t happen very often.

  6. Arc7Angel says:

On holidays, 10! My biological clock shuts off. On weekends, my mental clock wakes me up at 8, giving me 7 hours of sleep. On school nights, 8 if I don’t watch anime/play LoL (only if I have like finals the next day. lol), 5 if I do.

  7. Miss Nellie says:

Try working as a call center agent. I’ve been working as one for like 4 years already and my biological clock has been burned out like hell everyday. even during y day off days my body is waking up on wee hours of the morning. It forces me to wake up like 11pm then i’m unable to return to bed, so my PC keep me company during those days playing online games or updating my stories.

By the way i work from 11pm to 7 am, with 3pm as my lunch.

And because of this, i sleep at day, and when the heat of the day is unbearable I cannot sleep.

    • MkMiku says:

      Sounds tough. To think I almost applied for one. I’ve always wanted to work the night shift, but people tell me it’s hell. I have no problem sleeping during the day, though. ^^;

      • Miss_Nellie says:

Good if your surroundings are silent and cool, but when you are living in a house that everybody is awake while you struggle to sleep its hell. Even my cats is unable to make me sleep…

But again, the salary compensation pay off well…

  8. WOODLOUSE says:

I sleep anything from 8-14 hours, it’s very variable, which unfortunately causes me to have strange waking hours.

    • Miss_Nellie says:

they say that too much sleep actually causes one to become weak…dont know why…

      - Miss Nellie -

      • MkMiku says:

@WOODLOUSE I’m the same way. Although, even though my sleep time varies greatly, I seem to always wake up around the same time. :/

@Miss_Nellie I think it’s because of a lack of energy. When you sleep, your body goes into a type of hibernation. No food, no movement/exercise equals no energy when you wake.

  9. Riyoga says:

It always takes me at least 3 hours to write posts, because my attention span is garbage and I wander off into the nether regions of the Internet after every sentence or two (in fact, I’m supposed to be writing a post right now). Screws over my schedule pretty badly.

It’s usually okay for me if I don’t have homework (I’ll get around 8 hours of sleep), but if I do, then I only get 6 hours at best. If I have Calculus due the next day, ‘sleep’ gets removed from my vocabulary entirely (all-nighters suck).

However, if I don’t set my alarm on weekends, I’ll sleep for over 12 hours. Feels good.

    • MkMiku says:

Lol, I know what you mean. That’s why I write when an idea is fresh in my mind, or else I get distracted way too easily.

12 hours does feel good, but sadly it’s probably not good in the long run.

  10. Ebo says:

I can still watch anime all day, mostly because I still have no life. As long as I don’t have akathisia I’m good. ^__^

  11. Yi says:

I have jet lag right now, and I’m not really taking the effort to adjust it, so yea… Sleep schedule is pretty messed up. It’s a bit annoying.

    • MkMiku says:

I’m sure it’s highly annoying being tired during the wrong parts of the day. xD But a consistent sleep schedule should help that, assuming you have one (unlike me).

Sleep is one thing I want to cheat with. My body needs about 8-9 hours of sleep–but I try and get 5-6. It…it doesn’t work out for the most part. Wish I was consistent…
