5 Misconceptions about Gay People

Jun Watarase Happiness Anime TrapKonnichiwa, Mikuites! I know what you’re thinking: “What does this have to do with anime?” Well, if you’ve watched yuri or yaoi, then this is totally relevant. Here are five stereotypes about those who like the same sex.

  • Gay people can’t live normal lives.

Homosexuals can live normal lives just like everyone else. They could be your teacher, doctor, or even a librarian. In fact, the reason it comes as such a surprise when someone “comes out of the closet” is because people never suspected them to be gay to begin with. Most of the time you can’t tell just from the outside.

  • Gay people will do anybody.

Just because someone is homosexual, it doesn’t mean they will do anybody and everybody. Like straight people, gay people have standards, too. There are certain body types, hair colors, eye colors, etc. that they are attracted too. Just because they like the same gender, doesn’t mean that they like everyone within that gender.

  • Gay parents will have gay kids.

Gay parents will not necessarily have gay children, just as how straight parents will not necessarily have straight kids.

  • Being gay is a choice.

While I don’t have a right answer for this one, one could argue that why some people seem to “turn gay” is because they realize their innate feelings later on in life than others. Think about it: you didn’t consciously make the decision to be straight when you were born, did you? Why would gay people do the same?

  • Gay people are better than straight people.

Gay people and straight people, though they may act differently when it comes to relationships, are exactly the same intellectually. They are both the same species, so being gay doesn’t making you any smarter. Being straight doesn’t make you any more attractive. Gay people and straight people can be rude. Gay people and straight people can be kind. It’s just a personal choice.

Have you ever watched a yuri/yaoi anime before?

Alright, what’s the pun in this picture?

  2. As a pansexual who writes queer ya lit, I very much approve of this post, as it’s all incredibly true. And I watch yaoi all the time. Most of my time lately is spent looking up more yaoi fan art of Durarara!! characters.

  3. ayu says:

    agree :)

well..i am currently watching junjou romantica and gravitation :)

  4. baka~ says:

I’m fine with yuri but I just can’t stand yaoi… it’s a matter of preference though. In reality, I have no issues against gay people unless they tend to violate my rights as an individual (i.e. insult me, being rude, etc).

Well, as far as discrimination goes, the misconceptions posted above (except perhaps for the 4th one) hold true. Though, wouldn’t it be tad ironic if a self-proclaimed gay or lesbian hater tend to enjoy clothing created and designed by gays or lesbians? Talk about biting the hand that feeds you :D

    • MkMiku says:

There are many famous homosexual people out there: from politicians, to filmmakers, to artists, and athletes. The ironic thing is that most of society is not aware of this.

  5. baka~ says:

    Crap forgot to add

About 4: being gay is a choice

Since this claim is quite open-ended, on my perspective, being gay or admitting that one is gay (or lesbian) IS a choice and this is something to commend on. To stand out in the open and shout to the world about your true nature is something that requires balls. Even if they are gay, for me, people like these are more manly than the average self-proclaimed man… well, that’s how I view things though… orz

  6. Nopy says:

I like yuri, but yaoi really scares me. I downloaded some random anime episodes one time and one of them turned out to be yaoi, I was so shocked when two guys started undressing…

There’s nothing wrong with being gay, but I just don’t like to think about what happens in the bedroom, at least for male characters.

    • MkMiku says:

Whatever happens in the bedroom is their business. I just find it adorable when two people become intimate with each other, gender doesn’t matter.

  7. Yi says:

About number 1… Wouldn’t it be nice if that were true? There’s still way too many misconceptions and discriminations today that prevents many from leading normal, safe lives.

Also, agree about 4 and disagree with baka~

  8. For a moment I thought this would be focusing about the stereotypical relationship between ukes and semes, but turns out, this is pretty insightful about real life. Thanks for the info share \(^▽^)/

Finally, somebody giving some sense to people. And to be honest, I was sincerily considering trying to find ANYWAY to go straight before reading this. Heh… I think you saved my relationship hun, thanks.

  12. Hotspot says:

Those are very true! As a homosexual male myself, I have run into some of these misconceptions.

    1. I live life just like everyone else, there’s no difference AT ALL!

    2. All of my gay friends have standards, I do too! One of my friends is only into blond twinks, although most of my friends are into guys their age. But I am like a weirdo because I prefer older men, like 30-40. Everyone thinks I’m weird because of that. XD
I actually prefer romance over sex, I am not a sexual being. I mean, I get urges like everyone else, but I’d much rather be held or something.

    4. I know that this is not true really at all! When I was growing up, I wanted to be straight. I thought that being gay would be a horrible thing, the last thing I wanted to be was gay. I never chose it, and if it was a choice.. I obviously would have never chose it to begin with!
Although two years later, I am good with it and wouldn’t want to be anything but homosexual… or asexual, if I wasn’t homosexual I’d rather be asexual. I used to think I was for a long time, I’m just a late bloomer really. I’m the typical college kid who didn’t realize he was gay until college.
But there’s also the fact that gay people are extremely hated in the world! Why would anyone choose to be something that everyone hates? That makes no sense at all!
I do however believe that there are a few that literally choose to date the same sex, just because they aren’t getting anyone of the opposite. These kinds of people are probably one of the reasons why lot’s of people think being gay is a choice. I’ve heard recently that pretending your bisexual makes you popular or something like that.

    5. I took a test a few weeks ago and it said that I personally prefer gay people over straight people XD
But there are all sorts of bad and good people out there, it doesn’t matter whether someone is gay, straight, black, white, boy, girl.. there will always be someone that is good or bad of each kind and always someone is has a different viewpoint.
Most of the homosexuals I have met, were really nice. But I’ve also met a few sour apples as well.
I’ve met lot’s of nice heterosexuals, but also met lot’s of nasty ones. It’s all about the specific person.
