Konnichiwa, Mikuites! When Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magika was first announced, I expected something along the lines of a cutesy, slice-of-life anime like Hidamari Sketch with a bit of a magical spin.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Would you put everything on the line to grant a single wish? This is essentially what this albino cat-looking thing named Kyubey (or QB, if you so prefer) asks you before you make a contract to become a magical girl. Sure it sounds great to have any wish you desire come to fruition and be endowed with magical powers, but you are forever enslaved to fight powerful witches for the rest of your life, no matter the cost.
If they witches don’t kill you, they will certainly frighten you, because they look like things only nightmares could be made of. They exist in a special realm unlike our world –– literally; the moving paper collages add a new dimension.
The animation is beautiful, the story is poignant, and I wouldn’t expect anything less from SHAFT. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magika is a thriller under a pretense of a mahou shoujo anime. It’s no surprise that it’s the anime everyone is talking about this season. Everyone should check out this anime, unless you are turned off by frilly dresses, maybe.
Don’t worry, there really isn’t much to spoil at this point –– in terms of back story –– I mean. That’s probably the only thing that has bothered me about this anime. They kinda throw you right into the action without explaining much about Kyubey’s motivations or how the witches were created, etc. And I always wonder each episode if they are ever going to explain any of it, or just continue layering on the dramatic tension.
Also, from people’s reactions, I imagined Kyubey’s voice to be deep like the dragon from DBZ, but it’s actually quite kawaii, so I don’t know why so many people are creeped out by him. :3
Are you glad about the direction Madoka Magica is going? And do you think Kyubey is cute or creepy?
