Shinryaku! Ika Musume [Anime Review]

Shinryaku Ika Musume Cast CharactersIt’s no secret that the Japanese can make anything cute –– even an oil-spewing squid girl with tentacles. You say that’s not possible? Just watch Shinryaku! Ika Musume. ^_^

Shinryaku! Ika Musume was one of the funniest and cutest (episode 5, anyone?) anime of the Fall 2010 season. Ika Musume, the heroine(?) of this story, decides to leave the ocean and take to the surface in order to conquer humanity. Little does she know the kind of people and work that awaits her. Ika Musume ends up for working at a beach house for the two Aizawa sisters. Not only do the beach house customers not see her as a threat, but the beach-goers actually think she is cute! And who could blame them?

I loved Ika Musume’s cute voice, but I didn’t know why until I discovered that she has the same voice actress as Kanata Sorami from Sora no Woto. ^^; Ika Musume’s innocent and child-like personality reminded me so much of Yotsuba . Therefore, it’s no wonder that this series has quickly gained so much popularity. While Ika Musume’s age is unknown, she has the brain of a child –– she is hot-tempted and arrogant, but is also easily frightened, and is highly curious about the world that lay before her.

Ika Musume finds awe in simple things that we humans wouldn’t normally care about. But also fears things that most of us wouldn’t think to be scary.

I’m not going to spoil the events of the story for you, because half the fun is watching how Ika Musume interacts with and perceives our world. The other half is her amazing tentacle abilities (no, that is not hair she is wearing >>).

It’s safe to say that Ika Mususme has to be one of the best slice of life comedies not only this year, but of this decade.

The only one regret I had was that there were no underwater scenes. This is not The Little Mermaid or Umi Monogatari. Ika Mususme spends 99% of her time on land, but that shouldn’t stop you from watching this witty anime with its even wittier cast of characters.

It’s “Squidtastic” (sorry, just had to throw that in there).

The Squid of Destiny will soon return. That news alone makes me squee to no end. Squid Girl has given us so much in so little time that it’s only natural that we would want to see more of her story and interactions.
