When people start watching anime for the first time, probably the first thing they will notice, besides the huge eyes and moe character designs, are the rainbow of hair colors. I’ve always wondered, since I started watching over 6 years ago, what colors in the real world –– if any –– do their anime counterparts represent.
Red and orange are the easiest.
Blue is a bit harder. It can be blonde or brunette, I guess, depending on how light or dark it is.
I always assume that anyone with purple hair is a brunette. And those with black hair have…well, black hair, obviously.
But green, perhaps, is the most ambiguous. When you look at Ranka Lee doing the Nyan Nyan dance or see C.C. nomming on some delicious pizza, you can probably assume they are blonde. But what about Hatsune Miku? I just can’t imagine her with blonde hair in real life; that would look weird. I guess it depends on what mood she is in (happy or serious = blonde or brunette).
And what about those with white or gray hair? I actually think gray hair is sexy. My favorite anime character –– Rio Takeuchi –– has gray hiar, despite being only 16 years old. o.o

Depends on the show in question and 1) how close to reality it is supposed to be, and 2) on what the character is. As Miku is supposed to be an android her hair could well be bright green ‘in reality’, likewise any character that has a supernatural/technological origin.

White hair = <3
@Andy Lol, that’s an interesting article. I really wonder, though, how people would react seeing someone with purple or green hair during everyday life. o.o
@Anon I <3 Youmu from Touhou and Tenshi from Angel Beats.
